What Twitter can do to your talent pool?

Are you asking the same question still? Well, don’t you worry tons of HR pros ask the same question over and over again on how to leverage/use Twitter as part of their respective “social media strategy.” I tell you, using Twitter ain’t complicated and it won’t need Einstein for you to crack it – make the most out of it.

Now, to give you a clear case on what Twitter can do to your existing talent pool let’s look at Bill Gates case.

“Eight hours ago, Microsoft founder Bill Gates joined Twitter. Five hours ago, Twitter’s Caroline Mizumoto tweeted about it. And moments ago, @BillGates broke 100,000 Twitter followers.

If you’re looking for the breakdown, that’s about 12,500 Twitter (Twitter) followers per hour, or ~208 new tweeps per minute. In reality though, Bill’s follower count escalated after Caroline’s tweet, meaning his real rate of growth is about 20,000 new followers per hour.” – Mashable

You need a proof? You can visit Twitter or check the screenshot below.

Now, are you amazed at Twitters’ potential? Feel free to exploit Twitter while it’s free but don’t abuse it because they won’t hesitate to kick your arssss out!

Just imagine if you have that kind of BRAND. Making noise on Twitter won’t be a problem right?

What are others thinking for 2010 knowing that social media would really impact our business decisions? Wanna benchmark best practices with them? I want to and we all want to, but the problem is most of us HR pros posses a limited knowledge on what’s really social media – kodus of course to those who’ve bumped into a few crash courses online on what really social media is about.

Now, let’s move forward and face 2010 with all our might armored with a limited know-how on how to go about social media. Anyway, in this world, there’s nothing that can’t be learned. I guess  a few or if not most will agree.

As we move forward, we ask, what are others planning for 2010 with regards to social media? What are they looking forward to for 2010? Where will be the bulk of their respective resources be invested? These are just some of the few tricky questions our few HR pros should be asking for us to know where should we also direct our resources. Call it a copy cat but trust me they have the tools to predict or somehow predict where the future of the web is heading. Web 3.0? Semantics? Call it whatever you want anyway this will be a lot fun and challenging…

As I’ve said awhile ago we need to know what these guys are thinking for us to be on the same page and for us to reap calculated rewards – tools are everywhere my friend, if you have the bucks you’ll nail them before we or they do. Anyway, with that in mind, I’ve compiled a few write-ups (hoping for it to be a good read) for you guys to have a hindsight on how are they going to treat social media and where will they be investing of which a few are as follows:

  • Marketers Plan 2010 Increases in Social Media – the said initiative was supported by a survey, which was undertaken to gauge the importance of virtual events in the 2010 marketing mix and barriers to more widespread adoption, polled more than 100 US marketing professionals about their plans for next year.
  • Social Media Dominates 2010 PR Planning – Supported by a new whitepaper from Vocus with their 2010 PR Planning Survey results has some encouraging statistics about the increasing role of search engine optimization in the overall PR mix.

Upon thoroughly reviewing these surveys and its results, most of these companies will be heavily investing on “search engine optimization” and “search engine marketing.” As you can see, most of these social networking sites are now opening their doors to various search engines i.e. your social profile is now visible to various search engines if you’ve allowed it in your settings. Why these aspects? Because most of these companies believed that majority of the people online either search the web or visit their social media profiles. Now, with that, either way they can find you and attract you with various offers because nowadays, if you’re online, they can find you and they’re very good at profiling potential customers and potential talents.

Take your pick? Search engine or social networking sites? As I’ve said, either way, if you have the tools and the budget you’ll win.

This inside tip almost made me fall from my chair – literally! WT hell were they thinking? Well, he might have a good reason to implement such moronic policy to his staff, but, was he checking its entirety, its overall impact (pageant or contest?)and long term results? Darn! It takes noob HR to figure out its long term effect should it be implemented – actually, t’was already implemented.

Anyway, more of its  “worst practices” are as follows;

  • Sr. HR is not allowed to have lunch with the HR Assistant
  • HR employees don’t deserve a big increase because HR IS NOT PROFIT GENERATING – my present boss will argue on this, and so am I!
  • Executive Assistant to the CEO’s JD includes monitoring the surveillance camera for those HR who violated the above stated policy – she won’t be getting an increase if she keeps on doing that, but mind you the CEO thinks what she was doing was productive.
  • Executive Assistant to the CEO is more powerful than the HR Director/Manager – she can even  recommend who to fire and when to fire and that includes termination w/o due process. Maybe that’s the reason why they’re having a hard time looking for competent, motivated and engaged HR.

Now, isn’t it HR pros business is people? What about your HR? Is their only function glued to recruitment and other non-strategic administrative function? I just couldn’t imagine why this local BPO survived knowing that these practices are off-tangent to what we believe and understand about HR pros role.

Additionally, I’m not also discounting the fact that this Company is doing something RIGHT because they’ve survived for a couple of years now, but, the thing is – reality of this Company, turn over from agents, to HR Director and Operations Manager have been very rampant for the past months.

So, do you think this Company is doing something good still? That I doubt…

And the reason why HR pros are not allowed to mingle/have lunch/laugh with their employees? Because they were thinking that these employees might not respect HR – this reminds me of my previous HR Manager who once informed me not to get “wild” in one of our Christmas Party because of the same reason. LOL!!!

Good luck to you…

I was so blessed to hire a top performing HR on top of a cohesive existing support staff. As for the icing, we asked a former employee -  the one who resigned 6 months ago to settle in Singapore – if she’s interested to join the new team, new in the sense that I’m now spearheading the section – Employee Engagement (ER) – because their previous officer left.

I honestly believe that talent is useless if we can’t make the most out of it. Talent per se is nothing but a vacuum, not unless if we ask the bearer of it to get his/her hands or brains dirty and green, then that’s another thing. So, to make the most out of it we need also to place them somewhere where they can freely do the things they want – so basically it’s about being the right fit for the right job at the right time.

As time passes by, productivity takes the plunge and momentum is gone. So, in order for us to rally them again to one cause or another, we have to give them a break – not necessary a day off since they can have one if they want – a break wherein you get to sit back and relax, watch passers by, dating couples, joggers, runners, geeks on their laptops etc. with your team. And this is actually what I did to my team.

The other day I have to regroup the entire team because of the toxic schedules they’re having. One thing I’ve noticed is that we’re always confined in a four-walled room while doing the brainstorming for the next program to run. It seems that the room is not anymore helping us. As you can see, there are times our eyes need to see something for our brains to work. In fact, this is the reason why I hang out at coffee shops.

So, with the experience I have  on hanging out in coffee shops, parks etc., I brought my team to a place in front of a Park for a working breakfast since it has been awhile already that we haven’t had our meeting for us to be in the same page. And to get things in the right perspective we laid down the reportorials and deliverables for us not to be hitting around the bush. And also, it must not be that heavy to prevent burnout – completely work, work and work. Though you have the clear purpose, you must not constrain someone to talk topics outside of the scope, like spying on dating couples, joggers and by standers. Ain’t that fun?

This initiative is actually another crazy experiment of mine but it worked, and we had a great time. Do let me know what crazy stuffs have you done with your team to get their energy back! I’ll be glad to exchange notes with you.

Any Business Is Better Than Your Call Center Job. Is it not? This subject is actually the hottest topic in one of the local forums here in Cebu, Philippines – BPO’s hotbed. In fact, the topic/thread has about 25 pages already of which the thread starter has been flooded by violent reactions from call center agents and others who thought the topic was below the belt.

To note, the thread starter has highlighted a few thoughts as to why any business is better than your call center job as follows;

What can you get from a call center?
1. Good Salary?
Is an 18,000/ month salary big enough?
A current economic survey was done and concluded that a Filipino needs to earn at least 24,000/month to suffice with the current prices & needs. People reaching this salary mark are considered marginally poor.

2. It’s “In”?

3. Lots of Friends?

4. Lots Of Perks & Fun?

Isn’t it a routinary job that numbs out all your other senses?
Isn’t it a “garbage” job thats not fitted for people like you?
Fooled by the wrong perception of a good job?

Never tell me it’s the only job there is….
Never tell me you don’t have any common sense.
Never bound yourself on what you only saw.
You are not a robot. Aren’t you?

After all your works..what can you boast about yourself?…..the “twang”?
Its a fake perception of success & high achievement.
There’s no achievement in it.

THE BUSINESSMAN
They have the brains working…
They have the courage exercised all the time…
They have the real pride of achievements.
And most of all they have what is called “LIFE”

Now, what about your thoughts on this one? Is it or is it not? Actually, the way I see it is that things happen for a reason, and the reason why you’re a call center agent attending bitter calls from customers is part of a big picture called economy. I just couldn’t imagine all of us runs and manage our own businesses. I mean it’s okay to wear different hats but the thing is I doubt if someone will still work for you if your potential employees has got a business to run and manage -Utopia in chaos.

Anyway, I need to cut this post because its almost 7:00am and I need to be somewhere else. I need to be at the Casino Pilipino, Waterfront – to watch Manny Pacquiao’s quest for a 7th title from a tough customer Miguel Cotto.

Have a great weekend guys!
