Organization Effectiveness – the experience behind the title

By Rodelio Lagahit

Another fruitful weekend. Another page(life) completed but I doubt if I was productive this past few days.

Anyway, I had a great time with old and new acquaintances for the past two days. I never thought I could see their faces again, hence, I’m thanking People Management of Cebu (PMAP) behind the leadership of Chonita Cejas – a mentor of  mine – for organizing a fruitful learning session on “Organization Effectiveness”.

Actually, the said event was well represented from different sectors/organizations and industries. If I’m not mistaken a few yuppies from the BPO were there; from Sr. Operations Manager, Operations Manager, Officers and Supervisors. And also, a few came from various industries such as Copper mining Company, Real Estate, Apparel, Research, Technology and the religious sector.  I was even amazed that religious sectors (LDS) is now helping their church members to land a job by ushering them to specific job openings from Industry partners. A profound concept of which Convergys have taken advantage of to make ends meet.

With the program, I discovered that what I was doing for the past years was actually the basics/fundamentals in doing OD; from diagnosis, assessment, intervention, etc. it’s just that I was only referring to books, white papers and write-ups without any formal education. Though there were previous discussions from my mentors, it didn’t help that much not until today or these past few months wherein I was able to plot/implement my programs.

Furthermore, aside from being informative, I think the learning session was a mini Convergys conference because almost half of those who joined the learning session were from one Company – Convergys. But then again being an advocate of change for a BPO company it was also beneficial for me since I was able to witness and acquire a few best practices from them. You know, today, when we talk about innovation, it’s not anymore about banging your head for that creative juice to come out but rather it’s about ripping off and duplicating best practices with a twist.

As for the venue, it was just about alright. Although the Convergys group was in high spirits to criticize (in terms of accommodation, food, amenities etc.) in one of the activities, still, they were able to balance it by providing insightful ideas and opinions, but some were really serious in throwing those feedbacks like the likes of (cough) (cough). I’m pretty sure he was not there to audit the entire hotel (management, staffs, amenities etc.) because he was an HR guy who’s armed with a different purpose, but I think he was way too overboard with his comments. Anyway, as they say “you are what you say” so has to deal with it.
