Creating a better place 101 – Episode 1 (Andoks Chicken)
By Rodelio LagahitCreating a better place 101 – this initiative is a personal thrust of mine with the help and support of my wife. The said initiative has gained a small acceptance already from my old colleagues of iComm International and some new colleagues. Basically the concept is simple i.e help create a better place thru little things. If your into it, feel free to drop us a message and share your thoughts on how we can bring this initiative to another level.
As for my cause, I and my wife or say together with other interested parties would make it a habit to treat kids who are not lucky enough to dine on any fast food chains. We do every pay day. Today, I’m very glad to have fulfilled that promise again together with my supportive wife.
Things was not really according to plan because we we’re so hungry at that time after attending the 6:00pm mass. It just so happened that these kids (scavengers) passed by of which without hesitation I called their attention for them to join us at Andoks MEPZ II Branch – one of Philippines fastest growing fast food chain.
So I ordered an extra rice and we shared the liempo and chopseuy with them after which my wife started the conversation. We noticed something with these kids. The two were not in hurry of eating/consuming their food. In fact, the small boy wanted it even packed. So without hesitation we asked why and they reluctantly told us that they’ll have to share it with their grandma because they’re staying with her. Then my wife asked where’s your mom of which they told us that she’s in Manila – that we didn’t bother to ask them what was she doing there. Then we asked their dad’s whereabouts only to find out their dad has long been in jail that is why they’re now staying with their grandma. But what about school? They told us that they don’t have the money to get their birth certificates for them to enroll – i know it’s necessary but I don’t know if the government has a program for these kinds of kids. Anyway, we finished up and I told the kids to went straight home because their full already, but they told us that they’ll have to see their grandma because she’s waiting for them just a few blocks away. They’re just out here because they need to make a living by scavenging and scrapping.
I just couldn’t imagine what these kids have been going through without their parents to protect them. Same with what my dad told me about his struggles of landing a job wherein he slept on hallways and scrapped vehicles for almost a year just to have a covered roof while sleeping at night. Food was scarce because they have no money. Because they wanted to survive the opted to steal rice, fried fish and mongo for them to eat. No wonder he was very strict with us before and I thank you for that Pa’.
So to close our simple “CSR” for the day we ordered additional rise and pork for her grandma. With the smile on their face and a simple “thank you ate and kuya” before living made our night. Now my wife is behind me sleeping…
Note: for those interested on joining our little cause especially those from Cebu, Philippines please feel free to drop us a message or contact us. Take note, we just do this every pay day.
