
2008 Top 10 New Species : Fruit Bat from Mindoro, Philippine. Each year the IISE announces a list of the Top 10 New Species for the preceding calendar year and this year one specie coming from Mindoro, Philippines made it to the top ten. The Top 10 new species described in 2007, announced on May 23, 2008, are listed at IISE.
According to IISE, this large and charismatic fruit bat species is known only from the Philippine island of Mindoro so guys from the Philippines we should be proud of this on top of your Tarsier. In fact, It is only the second known species in the genus; the other species is known only from the Indonesian island of Sulawesi and nearby Togian Islands, and was originally discovered (and named after) Alfred Russell Wallace. So that you may know Wallace was a colleague of Charles Darwin and coauthor of their famous paper On the Tendency of Species to form Varieties; and on the Perpetuation of Varieties and Species by Natural Means of Selection.
Currently, the said specie is deposited in the University of Kansas Natural History Museum and Biodiversity Research Center, Lawrence, but to be transferred to the National Museum of the Philippines, Manila.
