MANILA, Philippines- The country’s jobless rate increased to 7.4 percent in January 2008 from 6.3 percent in October last year, the National Statistics Office said Tuesday. Moreover, according to previous reports the unemployment rate was at 7.3 percent in October of 2006. Would this amuse us? Not really, in fact it’s expected. So who’s to blame? If you’re to ask the leftist, The Government! Well, they might be on other aspects wherein they fail to attract more investors, but generally the government has done their job. It’s just that other private and public agencies have never done their job to eradicate unemployment gradually. Well, such initiative is not done overnight but rather on a continuous process and suppose everyone knows that.
Jobs
So how do see Philippines in terms of generating jobs? Well, Philippines is quite a good venue to pour down resources. This is based on research and established facts that Philippines is really a good venue for investments. In fact, a lot of BPO’s are coming in, and to highlight one, India’s Wipro have opened its Cebu Operations already months ago. In addition, based on conversations with various HR professionals & recruiters, they’re having a hard time sorting applicants now a days because some of them or most of them lack the minimum qualifications. In fact, most contact centers suffered the same i.e. shortage of resources.
Years ago, Lexmark even bragged that they have found a gold mine in the Philippines. Speculations were various resources were found to expedite their businesses growth. Months after, they told the rest of the business world that they are putting up their

Research and Development Team here in Cebu. Great ! So what gold mine was that? Human Resources! Presently, you might want to check IT Park Lahug, Cebu City for this topic. More and more sky scrappers are presently being built to accommodate businesses. So that tells us that investments are really coming in and jobs are being generated month after month its just that we lack qualified applicants. Thus, unemployment rate skyrocketed.
Educational Institutions
Let’s talk about educational institutions in general, and their impact to this present dilemma wherein I think most countries are suffering right now, or let’s compartmentalize this one for us to pinpoint the source of this problem. I believe it’s the present “educational political system” is culprit of this problem. Yes! Politics in our present educational system. Private and public educational institutions are mostly the same. They don’t have the right tool to filter out students, or if they have they haven’t implemented it religiously. Well, I know not all schools but most of our present colleges and universities right now have a very poor educational system wherein education and knowledge has been taken for granted by most professors. Most of these schools are just after of the students tuition fees for them to expand their schools without giving the students their dues i.e. knowledge. Some schools don’t provide the students and parents the exact forecast for them to fully asses themselves and their future plans whether or not their field wouldn’t be obsolete when the world turns towards the new era.
Moreover, some school professors are even asking a few $$$ for a student to pass. Some of these students also gave gifts to their professors just to get a passing grade. Now that’s not new, these claims might not be validated by data’s but it’s for real! These are just the common scandalous acts most of our professors and students are engaged with just to get their diploma.
So, whom are we going to attribute our present problem on unemployment rate? With these simple facts presented I therefore rest my case.
