I Blog For A Cause!

Below is a letter from a jobseeker. Actually, this letter was given to me months back after I blogged about her story “I blog for a cause“. I even posted her letter and her needs in one of my site (Careerclub Philippines) but unfortunately only a few responded and up until now I was not able to raise the amount for her needs. This time I’m plugging it again just in case to get someone’s attention who has a 2nd hand PC for her to pursue her dreams of helping her family.

Dear Sir Rodel:

Thank you for your compliments. That is very nice of you, I’m glad that my situation could serve or be a source of inspiration for others who want to establish or build a family despite their disability or other challenges they face in life.

My story is simple and quite typical of disabled people who have the same dilemma:

I am the eldest of six children. When I was almost a year old I was inflicted with poliomyelities virus which was an epidemic during those times. I was paralyzed waist down. I tried to finish my education despite the hardship of mobility (I use crutches way back then) and the teasing of school mates. I have a one goal in my life to land a job and to serve it faithfully. After I graduated I tried to look for a job and was quite disappointed, I was turned down 99.99%.

Luckily, a college adviser of mine suggested this NGO for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). I checked it out, and there I worked for more than 11 years. I love my job, it was my dream job. I am really eternally grateful to this institution because as I gained work experiences, this place has been my practicing ground for my interest in graphics. Not only that, this institution has aided us in times of emergencies. We were never turned down when we asked for help.

Here also, I met my husband. He was a helper in one of the institution’s packaging department back then (he is one of the driver now). I didn’t really plan to marry because it would be a big responsibility for persons like me, but I fell in love. We got married and was blessed with a daughter. We’re poor, but I’m very happy. I’m glad I made the decision to build a family. Now I really have something to look forward in life, not just living day to day without any sense of direction or fulfillment.

When I got pregnant with our second child and can no longer work, we are forced to moved back to my mother because we couldn’t afford to pay for the rent. Unfortunately my son was born prematurely and died after a week. My world crumbles, I feel that I’m going insane but I could not give up because I still have a daughter to take care of. I could never betray her, knowing that she has entrusted her life in my hands and that she was very young and couldn’t take care of herself.

My mother is getting old and has other responsibilities and there is no one to look after my child, so I decided to quit work and be a full time mother. After the tragedy, I have become a little paranoid too and fearful of my remaining child’s safety. I don’t really have much option at the moment, so I have to be contented with what my husband could bring home and just tighten our belts in order to make ends meet. Our struggle didn’t end there, with the growing inflation and now that my child is going to school, I have to think of means to supplement my husband’s income.

My sister has a computer and an internet connection, there I was fully introduced to the wide world of web. I saw lots of opportunities there, I market myself and offer my services. I got a few freelance job offers. I do layouting, image modification, data entry, you name it, I tried to offer as much computer services I know, but there has to be a limit to the number of job I take in, since I don’t have my own computer. When my sister is using her computer, I have to resort to renting computer in an internet shop just to meet deadlines. Owning a computer, is my primary goal, next to sending my daughter to college one day, of course . With my own computer, even a second-hand one, I can exploit possibilities offered in the net.

Right now, we are taking one day at a time, healing our wounds, hoping for Divine Intervention, when we are at least be given a break in life.

I hope my story will inspire other not to give up easily on life and think that others might have a much more worse plight than they have. If there is one thing I learned in this life is to be grateful of whatever I have, it is still a gift from GOD and we couldn’t be sure if He is doing a lot more… more than we can possibly think of.

Yours truly,

Catherine Quintua

For anyone interested to help, feel FREE to drop any amount using the donation button. As of to date, I already set aside a few dollars for her. If you have a 2nd hand PC that is not in use it would surely be of help since it is what she needs now and for us as well not to raise the money. I’ll just pay for the shipping cost if ever.
